Join us in the celebration of the Southern California Black Walnut, Juglans californica in our third year at Ascot Hills Park. We move forward with the intention that our collective actions will advocate, defend, and nurture the community of Black Walnuts and marginalized communities throughout Northeast Los Angeles by defending against development and displacement.

ABSURDITIES: An Anthology of Student Writing

We are living in a time in which we are told not to trust our intuition, our logic, our instincts. Instead, we should put our faith in people who know better than us. They tell us what not to read, what not to think, what not to do with our own bodies, who not to speak to or of. They tell us change is impossible, that we must live with threats of violence, and the violence, threats of extinctions, and the extinctions, that we must accept our powerlessness. Do not ask questions, do not do the calculations, do not look behind the curtain, do not reach out to your fellow human. We turn away from the casualties of war, from those who bleed and starve in the images on our screens. The world is coming at us fast but also, it seems, sideways, at a slant. So we type up careful stances from the safety of our chairs, wording and rewording sentences, thinking we are somehow changing the world. Maybe it’s time to meet absurdity with absurdity. Absurdity allows for humor—and anger—both of which can lead to action and therefore, hope. For in order to act, we must have hope.

Join us for the reading and launch of Absurdies: An Anthology of Student Writing

Poetry for Peace: reading and zine release

Poetry for Peace is a zine publication In collaboration with Avenue 50 Studio's Art for Peace exhibit now open. The zine aims to bring poets and their words together for a collective cause—to utilize poetry as a guiding source that may perhaps reverberate — as invocation — into the universe.

Join us for Poetry for Peace on December 17th at 2pm at Avenue 50 Studio to lend your spoken voice to the collective consciousness that is calling, begging for peace, for a ceasefire, for a safe return of all hostages.

For many of us, the most powerful thing we can do is to collectively call on the power of art and poetry to evoke empathy, understanding, and change. Special edition zines will be available for sale at $10 each, with all sales dedicated to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund (PCRF).

The PCRF was founded in 1991 by concerned humanitarians in the US, to provide free medical care to thousands of injured and ill children who lack local access to care. Current funding is going directly to their "Gaza Relief and Recovery Efforts," which aims to address urgent humanitarian needs and support long-term recovery efforts in Gaza—this includes essential medical supplies, food, medical treatment, clean water, and other eventual necessities such as rebuilding healthcare facilities, providing trauma counseling and mental health support for the long term. More information about the PCRF can be found here: https://www.pcrf.net

Takaape’ Waashut Northeast Los Angeles Black Walnut Day Kick Off Celebration

Join us for the kick-off celebration for the second annual
Takaape’ Waashut Northeast Los Angeles Black Walnut Day

Alternative Field is proud to sponsor the WEAVING WORDS COLLECTIVE WRITING WORKSHOP facilitated by Vida-Sylvestre and Yulu Fuentes
8:00 AM to 9:30 AM

Participate in a collective writing practice by T relani Michelle and Fireweed Collective. A walking meditation will guide us to our breakfast writing space to weave a poem that will be part of the NBWD Zine. Final collective poems will be read at the culmination. Facilitated by Vida-Sylvestre and Yulu Fuentes*.

The Southern California Black Walnut tree or Juglans californica continues to teach us many things about ourselves and our environment. The Northeast Los Angeles Black Walnut Day (NBWD) organizing committee welcomes you to its kick-off celebration at Ascot Hills Park, ’Ochuunga-El Sereno, Northeast Los Angeles (NELA) and 2023’s month-long events’ schedule.

This year we remember the Black Walnut’s ability to uplift us in land use and housing stability but also recognize its diversity, the tree’s multiple sexes, and resilience. The endemic tree to the Southland shows us what it is to survive under threat in an environment where 31% of its habitat(01) has been destroyed by urban development. NELA residents have felt the gut punch of gentrification, where nearly 60% of the population(02) are renters and have suffered housing instability in part from luxury hillside development. The Black Walnut has fought against these projects, such as the Eastern-Lombardy development of forty-two, one million dollar homes(03). Meanwhile, the Supreme Court and state governments dismantle the rights we have fought hard for, and the Republicans wage a culture war on LGBTQ people, among others, the Black Walnut teaches us how nature works and how to transform in its environment and survive. Celebrate the Black Walnut with us!

She has co-edited various anthologies, including pariahs: writing from outside the margins (2016) and Speculative Fiction for Dreamers (2021), among other publications. Tatiana de la Tierra (1961-2012) was a Latina lesbian writer and literary trailblazer. In the 1990s, amidst all the possible isms imaginable in publishing, Tatiana co-founded and co-edited the magazines Esto No Tiene Nombre, Conomoción, and La Telaraña. These magazines featured poetry, prose, photography, spells and musings from Latina Lesbians in both the U.S. and Latin America. These herstorical publications were groundbreaking, offering bilingual and Spanglish literary lifelines to Latina lesbians across borders. tatiana went on to produce several of her own works, among them her iconic For the Hard Ones: A Lesbian Phenomenology (published in 2002 by Calaca Press and in 2018 by Sinister Wisdom). Join us for an IG chat with Oombi Solis Flores on Thursday, 11/17 at 8:00pm PDT

We'll be talking with Oombi about their book, (Be)longing.

(BE)LONGING
(World Stage Press, 2022)

(Be)longing is a coming-of-age journey across borders and binaries. In their debut poetry collection, Flores offers memories and visions of self-discovery and queer intimacy. (Be)longing serves as a self-love handbook that will appeal to the deep longing we all share– to find a place where our hearts and souls can rest.

(BE)LONGING is achingly beautiful and brilliant. Each poem, delicately crafted, appeals to the deep longing we all have—to find a place where our hearts can rest—whether in the arms of a lover or in our own arms. (BE)LONGING is not only a fight to acquire one’s identity but a handbook on how to love oneself through grief and questioning. Oombi Solis Flores leads us on their uphill journey to a mountainous view where we can stand in awe and collectively say “we belong / we are here.”

Mexican LGBTQ writer, artist, and poet J. Daniel Cruz pulls from his experiences as a gay man and recipient of D.A.C.A. in this evocative collection of poetry. Expressing himself through eloquent verse, he takes on several themes: the push and pull between romance and self-preservation. The pain of growing up and living as a person of color in America. The passion of an artist. The frustration with national and global injustice.

Reflecting the author’s roots, original poems written in both English and Spanish are included. Also included are specially dedicated poems to celebrate beloved members of Cruz’s communities.

A Path of Roses and Thorns is a powerful and emotive collection echoing experiences that members of any community can empathize with.

We'll be talking with Sofía about Streaming Service: Seasons 1 & 2

Book 1: STREAMING SERVICE: golden shovels made for tv

STREAMING SERVICE: golden shovels made for tv is an ode to the historic, moving mode of episodic and serial storytelling. Without regard for genre, location, or air date, Sofía Aguilar borrows spoken tv dialogue penned by other writers and makes each word the sternum of her poems through an unusually structured but culturally transformative poetic form. Blurring the lines between fiction and reality, character and person, identity and heartache, Aguilar honors the stories that shaped her, that have been told before—all while bringing forth her own.

Book 2: STREAMING SERVICE: season two

STREAMING SERVICE: season two is the long-awaited sequel to Sofía Aguilar’s debut poetry chapbook, STREAMING SERVICE: golden shovels made for tv (2021). With a growing masterful hand, Aguilar returns to a familiar poetic form to weave together dialogue from more tv shows past and present (The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Bridgerton, I Love Lucy) with her own personal experiences of break-ups, new love, kinship, family, and navigating multi-faceted identity while still processing the trauma of history. Roping in fellow contemporary poets for collaboratively-written golden shovels (“crossover episodes”) and lyrics from a few of her favorite artists to create song-inspired golden shovels (“season soundtrack”), she creates an ever-expansive, ambitious, and most of all, tender love letter to television itself—all while writing her own story.
